Lalla Essaydi (Moroccan, b.1956) is a painter and photographer. Her work focuses on the Arab female identity in a 19th-century Orientalist style. She is well-known for hand-drawn Arabic calligraphy paintings done with henna on different types of surfaces, such as fabric, bodies, and even walls.

Galerie Edwynn Houk is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by Moroccan-born artist, Lalla Essaydi. The exhibition will include work from two of her ongoing series: Harem (2009-2014) and Bullets (2009-2014). Lalla Essaydi was born in Morocco, lived in Saudi Arabia for many years, was educated in Europe and the United States and now lives in New York.

Lalla Essaydi, explores the image of women in Islamic society. The follwoing images are from her very cool series entitled Harem in which her subjects are wrapped in robes and henna which echo the decorative Arabic tiles and patterns that wall the incredible interiors.She explores issues surrounding the role of women in Arab culture and their representation in the western European artistic.

Moroccan-born, New York-based photographer Lalla Essaydi (b. 1956) explores issues surrounding the role of women in Arab culture and their representation in the western European artistic tradition. Her large-scale photographs are based on nineteenth-century Orientalist paintings but work to subvert those stereotyped and sexualized representations.

Edwynn Houk Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of large-scale photographs by Lalla Essaydi from the artist’s most recent series, Harem Revisited and Bullets Revisited.The show will be on view from 16 May through 22 June 2013 with an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, 16 May from 6-8pm.

Lalla Essaydi’s exhibition at the Baku Museum of Art, Azerbaijan, interweaves African and Middle Eastern cultures. The Baku Museum of Art in Azerbaijan is holding New York-based Moroccan artist Lalla Essaydi’s solo exhibition (from 14 November 2013 to 14 January 2014).

Sixty years after Morocco gained independence from colonial rule, artists like Lalla Essaydi are producing art that challenges and redefines Orientalist tropes. In an inversion of tired Western depictions of the harem, Essaydi’s self-portrait sees herself barricaded against prying eyes with body armour.

In an effort to capture this experience, the exhibition “Lalla Essaydi: Revisions,” on view at the National Museum of African Art starting today through February 24, brings together Essaydi.
